Heritage Lottery Fund
St Augustine’s worked with the generous help and funding of the Heritage Lottery Fund to complete a project for the establishing of an Education, Research and Visitor Centre at the Shrine. The church and associated building have been restored and the new facilities allow access to St Augustine’s every day for everyone. Thanks to the Heritage Lottery Fund St Augustine’s is now in a position to host many activities for a variety of different audiences and to present multimedia interpretations of the key stories of St Augustine and Pugin for people from all ages and backgrounds.
Our project with the Heritage Lottery Fund
The project creates an education, research and visitor centre, which has increased knowledge and accessibility to the two themes of St. Augustine, founder of the Christian Church in England, and AWN Pugin, one of the most influential architects of the 19th century.
Located within the church Pugin designed and near where St. Augustine landed, it provides teaching, welcoming, display and visitor facilities and physical access through the principal areas of this seminal building.
It contributes to the regeneration of Ramsgate bringing together a wide range of users and contributors. Largely staffed by volunteers with the support of the Pugin Society and the local community, the project explains the place of St. Augustine and the influence and designs of Pugin.

The HLF continues to support St Augustine’s
IN May 2020, we applied for and were awarded an Emergency Covid Grant of £7,100 by the HLF. This has been used to improve our digital services, viz, the website you are reading was funded with this grant as was the Virtual Tour on the Home page. We also invested in new gardening tools so that we could manage the churchyard and garth areas more effectively.
The fire alarm system was unreliable and we were able to set up a contract with Chubb who have sorted out the problems. The grant also funded the purchase of cleaning materials in order to provide a Covid secure environment within the church.
These improvements could not have been made without the support of the HLF and we are enormously grateful for it.
