Appeal

The Catholic Bishop’s Conference of England and Wales has granted us £340k to help fund urgent repairs to the roofs of the Bell Tower, North Cloister, St John’s Chapel, Confessionals and North Porch.  Problems include loose tiles, leaks and occasional squirrel infestations.

The money forms part of the Culture Recovery Fund from Historic England – a government initiative to support cultural institutions after Covid.

As with all such grants, the recipient has to raise a portion of the cost themselves.  In our case this was £68k.  We have been able to contribute £15k from our own funds but need to raise the additional £53k.

Latest news (28/1/22) – we have raised £15k so far from our very generous individual supporters and have been granted £10k by the Lottery Community Fund.  This leaves £28k to complete the project.

Update (4/6/22) – we have received a much needed £10k grant from the Benefact Trust and an additional £8k from individuals.  Just £10k to go!

Update (30/6/22) – We have received another generous individual donation.  Just £8k to go!

Update (26/7/22) – The latest donations mean we now have just £4k to raise.  Thanks to all our generous benefactors.

Update (29/8/22) – That’s it, we have reached our funding target of £68k.  Thank you to all our generous donors.  The roofs have been repaired (except for some tiles which arrived late and must be laid on the North Cloister).  St John’s is looking magnificent.  Learn all about it during Pugin Week.

The plan is to conduct a quinquennial survey to identify priorities for further work.
